Luca Stoll

Born in Switzerland, saxophonist Luca Stoll lived for ten years in New York. There he attended the Barry Harris workshop, and learned his trade at jam sessions and sitting in with masters such as Branford Marsalis, Harry Allen and Grant Stewart. He performed as a leader and as a sideman in such venues as Fat Cat, Smalls, Little Branch, and Kitano Hotel. He attended the New School (BFA, 2007), the City College of New York (MA, 2013), and Phil Schaap's jazz course and teacher's seminar at Jazz at Lincoln Center (Jazz Scholar degree, 2012). He studied privately with saxophonists Branford Marsalis and Grant Stewart. In 2014, he moved to Oxford (UK), where he wrote a doctoral dissertation on Coleman Hawkins (DPhil, 2021). His main influences are Coleman Hawkins, Don Byas, Ben Webster, and Lucky Thompson. His repertoire focuses on classic jazz from the 1930s to the 1950s, featuring compositions by jazz greats and standards from the Great American Songbook. He has been active on the jazz scenes in New York and in London, and has toured in France, Bahrein, Japan, England, and Switzerland. He has performed with Alvin Queen, Kenny Washington, Andrea Pozza, Dennis Irwin, Clovis Nicolas, Steve Little, Jeb Patton, Takuya Kuroda, Steve Brown, Mike Kanan, and Steve Fishwick. He currently lives in Switzerland, and teaches jazz history at the Haute Ecole de Musique in Lausanne.
